I am often out looking for wildlife at night, Nightjars, Moths, Bats there is loads to look for, as well as having a dark sky area nearby to admire the stars. But going out to find mushrooms in the middle of the night? Not often. Well, thats what I thought until I ventured to photograph and film one of our commonest mushroom species, Sulphur Tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare) in the middle of the night in Eryri National Park.
I made a video about it, so if you are a bit like me and watcher rather than a reader then just watch the video above and enjoy. I have included a couple more pics though below, just because I really like them and hope you do as well.
These images were captured in the dark but using an UV torch to show the fluroscent properties of this mushroom, which is growing all the way up a dead standing Oak.
A shot showing a bit more detail, only the mushrooms are showing up in the UV light, the bark of the tree, leaves etc do not 'glow' anywhere near as much in the time it takes for the camera to expose the mushrooms so they just appear as dark.
This won't be the last time I spend time in the woods at night with a UV torch, there is a whole other world to discover and I can't wait :). Dave
